Kenya captain credits team's belief in each other for historic win

Hamamatsu, Japan, September 29, 2018 - A stellar performance by Mercy Moim led Kenya to a historic straight sets victory (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) over Kazakhstan in Pool D at the FIVB Women's World Championship on Saturday night. The captain said the team's belief in itself was key.

Kenya captain Mercy Moim: This means a lot. It is our first time to win at a World Championship. We believed in ourselves and our training. Our coaches prepared us well. We played like normal against Kazakhstan and did what we do in practice.

Kenya coach Japheth Munala: I'm happy. We were very well prepared for this match. I'm pleased that our practice has yielded results.

Kazakhstan coach Shapran Vyacheslav: It was the first game and our players were nervous. They could not show their best performance. Maybe in the next matches we will be better. We will try to take it game-by-game.

Kazakhstan captain Radmila Beresneva: We had problems with our block and mades lots of errors. We have to change our game for tomorrow. We hope it will be better.
