Kenya claim second win at World Champ qualifiers

 

Kenya's players celebrate another win

Lausanne, Switzerland, October 8, 2017 – Kenya again demonstrated their strength when they made it two wins from two at the Japan 2018, FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship CAVB Qualifier on Sunday.

Japheth Munala’s team defeated Senegal 3-0 (25-21, 28-26, 25-15) at the Palais des Sports in Yaounde.


The tournament doubles as the African Women’s Championship. It began on Saturday and the first round continues till October 11th. The medal matches take place on Saturday, October 14 and the top two will qualify for Japan 2018, which runs from September 29-October 20. 

Kenya are chasing a first World Championship appearance since Japan 2010 having missed out on the Italy 2014 edition. They have won five of the last six African Championships and nine in total, more than any other country. 

Mercy Moim and Edith Mukuvulani led the match scorers with 15 points for Kenya, while Sow Binetou led Senegal with 12 points.  

Egypt started their campaign with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-14) win over Algeria. They were inspired by Aya Elshamy who led scoring with 17 points.

Tunisia opened their tournament with a win as they defeated Nigeria 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-11).
