Thailand make their fifth appearance in the FIVB World Championship this, looking to better their previous best of 13th place which they have achieved twice; in their 1998 debut and again in 2010. They have never qualified for the Olympic Games, narrowly missing out on the Rio 2016 Olympic Games two years ago.
In 15 appearances at the FIVB World Grand Prix, Thailand made it to the finals three times, with their best finish coming in 2012 when they placed fourth.
Thailand first climbed on the podium of the Asian Games in 2014 after beating Japan 3-0 in the bronze medal match. They were twice crowned Asian champions, in 2009 and 2013, and also have three bronze medals in the competition. Thailand claimed their first silver in the latest edition, in 2017, after losing 3-2 to Japan in the final.
