Germany and Netherlands look for winning edge in 11th encounter

 

Yokohama, Japan, September 29, 2018 – After claiming five wins apiece in their previous FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship encounters, Germany and the Netherlands meet anew for a lead in match wins.

Head-to-Head
• Germany and Netherlands have met 10 times before at the World Championship, with German teams claiming five wins, and Netherlands winning five times.
• Germany won the last encounter versus Netherlands at the World Championship, 3-1 in 2010, a match played in Nagoya, Japan.
• Netherlands had won the previous three matches against German sides in this competition.
• At world major level tournaments, Netherlands have won 10 of their last 11 matches against German teams, since a 3-0 loss against West Germany at the World Championship in 1982.
• World level major competitions are: Olympic Games, World Championship, World Cup, World Grand Prix, Grand Champions Cup and Nations League.
• Germany's only win in this run of 11 matches was the 3-1 victory at the World Championship in 2010.
• Germany and Netherlands met each other in the 2018 Nations League, with the Dutch claiming a 3-1 win in Stuttgart, Germany. Nika Daalderop scored 20 points for Holland in this match.

Germany
• German teams have participated in 16 of the previous 17 World Championships. Only in 1967, there was no German side in the tournament.
• The best result for a German team was a fourth-place finish for the German Democratic Republic in 1974 and 1986.
• Germany's best result since the reunification in 1990 was a fifth place finish in 1994. This was the first World Championship for Germany since the reunification.
• Germany finished ninth at the World Championship in 2014, when they won their last matches in straight sets, against Belgium and Azerbaijan.
• Germany finished 11th in the Nations League in 2018. Their last match in this tournament was the 3-1 defeat versus Netherlands.
• Louisa Lippmann was Germany's top scorer in the Nations League on 224 points.

Netherlands
• Netherlands make their 14th appearance at the World Championship and their eighth in a row, since they last missed the event in 1986.
• Holland's best result is a seventh place in 1998. They finished 13th in 2014.
• Netherlands have played 10 matches against German sides at the World Championship (W5-L5), more than against any other opponents.
• Netherlands have won their opening match in each of their previous six World Championship campaigns, since losing their first match in 1990 against the Soviet Union.
• The Dutch team reached the final round of the 2018 Nations League in which they lost to China and Brazil.
• Lonneke Slöetjes was top scorer for the Netherlands on 239 points in the Nations League (preliminary round and final round combined).
