Hosts Cameroon begin World Championship qualifiers with win

 

Hosts Cameroon opened with a victory against Botswana

Lausanne, Switzerland, October 7, 2017 – Hosts Cameroon and African champions Kenya opened their campaigns at the Japan 2018, FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship CAVB Qualifier with wins on Saturday.

The tournament is taking place at the Palais des Sports in Yaounde, Cameroon and doubles as the African Women’s Championship. It began on Saturday and the first round continues till October 11th. The medal matches take place on Saturday, October 14 and the top two will qualify for Japan 2018, which runs from September 29-October 20. 


Japheth Munala’s Kenya team defeated Nigeria 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-10) and were led in scoring by Brackcides Khadambi who finished with eight points.

Kenya are chasing a first World Championship appearance since Japan 2010 having missed out on the Italy 2014 edition. They have won five of the last six African Championships and nine in total, more than any other country. 


Host nation Cameroon also enjoyed a straight-sets victory, 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-17) over Botswana, while Senegal had to dig deep to hold off DR Congo 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15).
